Why I’m glad I don’t belong to the LP

April 29, 2008

I don’t pay much attention to the Libertarian Party because it seems hopelessly incompetent as a political party, but Mr. Quick (the other Jeffrey) brought this one to my attention.

Prosecuting child pornography is a valid police function under the NonAggression Principle, but when the police are chronic aggressors in almost every other field of life, why would we want to encourage them in any thing? Why, especially, would we want to find another area in which the Federales can grow? When you have a cancer, you don’t let it grow for the sake of fighting another disease.

That said, I will probably vote LP in the fall. I don’t have Mr. Quick’s tolerance for a party whose platform starts off with this:
The Constitution Party gratefully acknowledges the blessing of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as Creator, Preserver and Ruler of the Universe and of these United States. We hereby appeal to Him for mercy, aid, comfort, guidance and the protection of His Providence as we work to restore and preserve these United States.

This great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been and are afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.

Or I could just not vote at all, I guess.

Chavez family cashing in on Hugo’s presidency? Imagine that!

Money quote:

Adán is the one brother who doesn’t live in Barinas, but he is the president’s minister of education and is seen as the one most likely to run for governor, given the corruption accusations tainting the other brothers.

given the corruption accusations tainting the other brothers

I believe the Spanish word that applies is ladron.

Prophet Wright

April 29, 2008

I haven’t found a complete transcript of Jeremiah (Is Not A Bullfrog) Wright’s speech to the NAACP, although his appearance at the NPC is available on the web.  But it’s the NAACP speech that I found more interesting. (more…)

Praying for a plague

April 27, 2008

MadPriest found this story about an effort to annoy God into lowering oil prices.

MP, being MP, is kvetching that we in the States shouldn’t fuss, compared to how much they pay in the UK. Of course, much of that difference in the UK is caused by much higher taxes. And they do have a better intercity transit system than we do here. Plus of course it helps that the whole place from Land’s End to John o’Groat can fit inside individual states–my own, for example.

But what struck me is what this guy–the one who’s leading the prayer effort–is really asking God to do. Since much of the higher prices are due to demand in China and India, he’s asking God to inflict plagues and other horrors on Asia so we can go back to having cheaper gas here in the States. (And despite what MP says, it’s gas, it’s gas, it’s gas. Petrol is just short for petroleum, which is the stuff that comes out of the ground, not the stuff that goes into the car.)

Another thing God might do is make sure America gets out of Iraq and get the whole Middle East to settle down and behave. However, that would be an outright miracle, wouldn’t it?
