McCain throws another one under the bus

While Obama has been busy throwing people under the bus, let’s not forget that McCain has a bus of his own, and hasn’t been afraid to throw some people under it himself. The main difference is that McCain’s victims have been mostly lobbyists and staffers. The person with the highest profile under the McCain bus has been Hagee–who, ironically, got thrown under the bus for saying something that is actually, from the premises of orthodox Christian and Jewish theology, unobjectionable.

Now here’s the lastest, Clayton Williams of Texas. Mr. Williams’s crime was making a really bad joke while running for governor in 1990 against Ann Richards.
McCain could have said, “It was eighteen years ago, and he apologized for them, and I think that’s enough.” But instead–under the bus.

McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said the Monday event was being cancelled, given the offensive comments. He said he could not yet say what McCain would do with donations brought into the campaign by Williams.

“These were obviously incredibly offensive remarks that the campaign was unaware of at the time this event was scheduled,” Rogers said. He added that Williams apologized for the comments back in 1990, but he said that does not excuse them.

In Obamaspeak, this comes out as “This wasn’t the Williams that I knew.”

It’s quite possible that Williams was offered up as sacrifice on the altar of Hillary-voters, since McCain has also recently promised to increase the number of women in government positions.

I assure you, with confidence, at the end of my first term you will see a dramatic increase of women in every part of the government, in my administration,” McCain said. “I look you in the eye and I promise.”
