Survivor comes to kindergarten: update

May 31, 2008

Someone named BillK has left two comments on my earlier post with some links giving fuller information.
The two most important ones:
The police report
A local columnist listing some other offenses linked to the Port St. Lucie schools recently.
And a CBS morning show report with fresh facts–young Mr. Barton is now officially diagnoses with both Asperger’s and ADD, and Ms. Portillo, the teacher, has been reassigned to office duties for the duration of whatever investigation is going on now.

Survivor comes to kindergarten

May 25, 2008

So you’re really clumsy, find it very hard to make friends, and get called names a lot of the time. You’re also five years old. So what does a good kindergarten teacher do?

Let the other kids vote you out of the class, of course.

No mass in Minn.

May 19, 2008

It seems that the family of an autistic boy in Minnesota is distinctly unwelcome in church.

I have an idea that there’s a bit of obstinancy on both sides here. Perhaps it was a question of limited resources, but I can’t believe that no one, in the family or out, could be found to sit with him while the rest of the family attended Mass; nor can I believe that the parish priest could not find a way to visiting them weekly with the Eucharist at home as part of his regular schedules.

That said, family and church should have worked together to help Adam Race adjust to the sensory overloads that inevitably come in a public place, and to help him experience what the Eucharist is for the rest of the family.
